Safety Tips |
- Avoid setting Christmas tree near electric heaters
Cook stoves, ovens or wood stoves.
Maintain at least a 5' distance
- Use only specifically rated extension
cords for interior or exterior use.
- Do not staple or nail lights or extension
cords when hanging them on exterior
eaves.
- Turn off Christmas lights when away from
home - Use a timer system.
- Inspect all lights, cables, outlets clearly and
correct any problems.
- Water Christmas Tree daily
- Check, test and regularly replace batteries in
smoke detectors.
- Use secure and sturdy Christmas tree stand.
- Keep fire extinguisher close by and learn its
proper use.
- Do not leave children unattended around Christmas tree.
- Do not overload circuits or electrical outlets.
- Do not over power fuses with too large fuse.
- Encourage a neighbourhood watch program if away
from home.
- If away from home more than 48 hours , arrange
competent adult to check home daily.
- Notify Police Department if expecting a long
absence from home.
- Always lock all doors, windows, basement windows
and garage/outbuildings when away.
- Do not leave matches or lighter in any place
accessible by children.
- Do not leave candles unattended at any time.
- Do not burn candles near curtains.
- Do not store ashes in wooden or cardboard box,
use metal bucket with lid and always store
outside. Avoid storing in garages or outbuildings.

- Always place spark screen securely over
fireplace.
- Always burn dry seasoned wood.
- Do not pile stove wood closer than 36" to a stove or
furnace .
- Always keep furnace or stove doors shut
and latched.
- Do not burn garbage, plastics, cardboard boxes,
chemical containers or batteries.
- Plan out and use an escape route and meeting
place outside in case of fire. Practice it.
- Use only CSA approved deep fat fryer with
thermostat control.
- Never heat a pot of grease on the stove.
- Avoid leaving stoves/ovens unattended when
cooking.
- Do not leave children unattended around stoves
or ovens.
- Never use Barbeques or Hibachi grills indoors.
- Keep roof clear of snow and ice when possible.
- Keep walkways accessible and clear of ice and snow.
- Keep driveways clear of snow.
- Dispose of greasy oily rags as soon as possible.
- Clean smoke pipes and chimneys regularly.
- Change batteries in smoke alarms spring and fall.
- Keep pasture fences in good repair.
- Use proper caution signs on farm equipment.
- Use proper safety guards on all farm equipment.
- Have your furnace cleaned and maintained regularly.
- Replace your oil barrel if it is over 20 years old.
